State Senator Matt Smith (D-Allegheny/Washington) and Bethel Park officials met with County Executive Rich Fitzgerald to take a closer look at Brightwood Road and talk about county plans to reconstruct the road later this year.

The 1.9 miles of roadway loops from Library Road back to Library Road and runs adjacent to the Port Authority light rail.

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works will begin contacting the public utility companies to make notice of the proposed project and will be putting the contract out to bid shortly. Work is expected to include milling and paving 4" of asphalt, full-depth restoration of the roadway in failed areas, upgrade of the existing drainage system, and embankment stabilization.

The Department is hoping to maintain traffic at all times with single lane closures occurring under flagging while work is performed. A closure and detour may be needed to remediate the embankment stabilization portion of this project, but is not known at this time. Work is scheduled to begin this summer and will be completed by the end of the year. The project is estimated to cost $2.3 million.

Bethel Park Council President Tim Moury also joined councilmen Paul Dixon, Jim McLean, and Jim Hannan in pointing to plans for intersection improvements at Brightwood and South Park Roads - resulting from receipt of a state Department of Transportation Automatic Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant. Pending permit approval, Bethel Park officials are targeting late 2015 for work to begin on the intersection.
