North Charleroi Borough Council has approved the construction of a new road salt storage bin to be built next to the borough fire hall.

At a very short regular monthly meeting held February 18, Council voted to spend $2,500 for the new storage bin, which will replace the one currently in use near the borough building. The new bin will provide a higher storage capacity for road salt.

The Borough must purchase the road salt prior to the winter season, and any tonnage that cannot be stored in the bin must be kept off-site, at a cost to the Borough. Council members said the new bin will create a cost savings in the long run because of the extra storage capacity.

Council members also approved the purchase of a gas detection meter at a cost of $1,500 that will be used by the Borough street department. Department workers will utilize the meter when digging near streets and sewers to prevent the possibility of explosions that could be created by natural gas leaks.
Council’s next meeting is scheduled for March 18.
