At the first regular meeting of 2013, New Eagle Council reminded residents that it is their responsibility – obligation – to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks.

Mayor Glenn Petticord cited the ordinance that requires residents to keep sidewalks in front of their properties clear for foot traffic. Local mail delivery personnel have complained that some residents don’t clear a path, making it difficult – and dangerous – to deliver mail. Other pedestrians are also at risk.

Council warned that citations will have to be issued for residents who don’t comply with this ordinance.

It’s not just sidewalks being neglected by some New Eagle residents. Council also discussed the high number of residents who are behind in paying their $99 annual trash collection fee. Nearly 20% of the residents are currently delinquent. Citations will be issued for these residents, as well.

In other business, Council ended its contract with Code Enforcement Associates due to a slow response time. They have hired the borough’s engineering firm, HMT, for code enforcement services.

Also, Council approved a $10,350 contract with Schaaf Excavating and Contracting of South Park to demolish a vacant building at 127 Union St. (formerly The Hawk’s Nest).

An additional structure at 335 Madison St. will be razed in the coming months.
