The first Monessen City Council meeting of 2013 was held on Wednesday, January 16th.

Councilman William Manus publicly read three thank you letters drafted by him as representative of the Dept. of Streets and Public Improvements. The first was to Herman Alvarez of El Grande Industries thanking him for the company’s excellent work on several city paving projects last year. The second was addressed to Gabe Hudock, president and owner of Alumisource, thanking him for storing Monessen’s overabundance of road salt left over from the mild 2011/2012 winter. The last letter was to Sherri Fertall, owner of the local restaurant The Pasta Shoppe, thanking her for her continued service to the community.

Council approved a request from John S. Nestor for a handicap parking sign at his residence. Motions were also approved to add Nancy Horvath to the Prisoner Watch List and to accept the resignations of crossing guards Cindy Gernot and Mary Ann Tineri, effective December 21, 2012 and February 2, 2013 respectively. A motion was also approved for consulting services of Urban Design Ventures for the development of the planned Monessen Cultural and Arts Center.

Mayor Mary Jo Smith made her State of the City address. She stated, “Monessen continues to work diligently to move the city forward and we must invest in ourselves before others will invest in us.”

Mayor Smith also announced that the city has a new website, which can be found at www.cityofmonessen.com, and reported that Council had previously instituted the street rehabilitation program, as promised in her 2009 election campaign. With that program, they paved Monessen and Pennsylvania Blvds. and in coordination with the water and gas companies paved Columbus and Pacific Blvds., Service Lane, and Alexander and Dennis Aves. In closing, Mayor Smith said, “ We will continue to rebuild this community one street at a time.”
