The Greater Monessen Historical Society wishes to thank Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center and the many patrons and friends who turned up for the birthday party on June 24, commemorating the 175th anniversary of Colonel James Schoonmaker’s birthday.

Colonel Schoonmaker was the hero of the Third Battle of Winchester, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as a founder of the City of Monessen.

The annual Founders Day celebration will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Monessen City Park and will feature a car cruise by the Monessen/Rostraver Rotary Club. There will be re-enactors setting up an authentic Civil War camp, games, food booths, entertainment and fun for the entire family.

The spring exhibit at the Monessen Heritage Museum on the Orthodox Monessen churches will be available for viewing through July on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. It covers the four Orthodox churches of the city: St. John the Divine Russian Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church, St. Michael’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, and St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church.

The upcoming autumn exhibit will focus on the 55th anniversary of the visit to Monessen by President John F. Kennedy, as well as other presidential visits.
