The Family Kick-Off Beach Party at Charleroi’s John K. Tener Library had fun for the whole family on Sunday, June 4, as even parents were caught playing in the sand!

Linda Stennett, Library Board President, right, helps Library Director Toni Zbyl’s daughter Ally Wheeler, 5, work on crafts.

Although it was the first time for a Sunday, the 12:30 p.m. program had a good turnout, and it was a beautiful, warm day outside.

Toni Zbyl, Library Director for 17 years, preferred to remain behind the scenes, but her work did not go unnoticed. Linda Stennett, President of Library Board, noted, “If it weren’t for Toni, none of this would be here.” She waved her hand around at the party in progress. “I come in, and I just say that this looks great. She plans everything and runs the library.”

The event featured lunch, crafts for children, which included visor hats, leis and hula skirts, and then again playing in the sand. The whole program was family-oriented and parents helped out with the party.

The entire outdoor area has been revitalized with a grant a year ago from an anonymous donor. Events are held rain or shine and may be moved to their basement.

Stennett said, “The whole idea of the program is to make people aware of us and obviously to make them come to the library. We need you as supporters, and you need us, whether to have a beach party or whatever. Stop in, and you’ll be amazed.”
