The theme for this year’s Mid Mon Valley Cultural Trust Board (MMVCT) 2018 competition celebrates an iconic favorite song from the “Sound of Music.”

This year’s competition will include a photography category as well as the art category to expand and promote the opportunities for this local competition. The competition is open to local artists and photographers living in Mon Valley communities or attending school in areas that share commonality and runs through June 9, 2018.

There are four age categories in the art category, ranging from 8-79+ years of age, and two age categories in the photographer category: 18 and under and 19 and over. The application will also require a short paragraph describing their inspiration for choosing their favorite thing. First place winners in each age category will receive $100 and could also be a winner for sponsored awards donated by local businesses ranging from $25 to $75. Local businesses will name their award after a favorite thing and select the winning recipient from entries in either category.

Community Bank is partnering with the Trust this year to publish the winning entries in both the art and photography categories in a packet of post cards to highlight our talented local artists and photographers. Donna Vesely, MMVCT Chair said, “Tim Urda, owner of Badzik Printing in Monessen, donates his expertise and provides first quality printing for the box of cards. Post cards will provide a history of our local artists’ and photographers’ works and [give them] the experience of having their work published.”

As with last year, local library branches will be the drop off locations for entries and are listed on the MMVCT’s website. After the June 9 deadline, entries will be displayed for the judges and public at SPHS in Charleroi from June 15 to June 28. The artwork will be judged again this year by Parker Burroughs, Suzie Sparks, Lenora Palonder, Jim Bove and Mary Ann Kopach Laber.

Judges for the photo category have not been confirmed, but will be shortly, and will be included on the MMVCT website.

The Opening Reception and one day exhibit will take place on July 1 at the Mon Valley Country Club. Winners will be announced at the reception and will include workshops and music to offer a variety of experiences throughout the day.
