A familiar theme will prevail when the eighth annual Coach Joe Howard Memorial Golf Outing is held Friday, June 14 at Uniontown Country Club. All proceeds from the outing, which is hosted by the Cal U Football Alumni and open to the public, will benefit the Coach Joe Howard Memorial Scholarship at California University.

Joe Howard
James and Esther Howard-Pevarnik of Latrobe established the endowment from which scholarships are awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior football player at Cal U. Recipients must display athletic ability, academic excellence and strong moral development.

Howard, a longtime resident of Latrobe and a 1966 graduate of then California State College, began his teaching and coaching career at Greater Latrobe High School that year. He was the defensive coordinator under head coach Chuck Findley in 1968 when Latrobe won the WPIAL Class AAA championship by defeating Kiski Area 19-7. He became head coach at GLHS in 1972 and died in 1977 while leading pre-season drills with his team.

The June 14 golf outing will begin at 12:00 noon with registration and light refreshments. The shotgun format tournament will start at 1 p.m. A car will be awarded to the golfer making a hole-in-one.

The cost is $125 per golfer, $250 per twosome or $500 per foursome. The fee includes a full round of golf, sandwiches during play and a sit-down dinner and awards program. An auction of sports memorabilia will take place during dinner.

Individuals not wishing to golf are welcome to attend the dinner at a cost of $50. Individual contributions also will be accepted from those unable to attend the event. A special $2,000 Vulcan Sponsor designation and a $1,000 Red and Black Sponsor designation are available and include two foursomes and listing in the program book..

Checks should be made payable to: The Foundation For California University of Pennsylvania (Attention: Shayna Aberegg) and sent to PO Box 668, California, PA 15419.

Special prizes at the golf outing will be awarded for closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, closest second shot and team low gross. A silent auction of sports memorabilia and other prizes will be awarded at the dinner. The sports items include footballs, hats, jerseys, photographs and books autographed by numerous sports luminaries.

Additional information about the golf outing is available by contacting Lynn Baron at 724-938-1541 or baron@calu.edu.
