Ringgold Elementary School North (RESN) students in Mrs. Wendy Parzich’s and Mrs. Kelli Schmeltz’s social studies classes participated in a program called "Heartland Honor Flight" for veterans.

Third grade students meeting veteran Ricky Garcia via Skype

Students created cards and questions for veteran Ricky Garcia, age 86, from Kansas City, MO and prepared for a Skype session with him. After his flight to Washington, DC for a wonderful celebration and touring all of the monuments, Mr. Garcia received a mailbag from the students and enjoyed reading their cards on the flight home. His guardian, Amy Larsen (Mrs. Parzich's dear friend of over 30 years), went to his home to set up the Skype call with him.

Both principals stopped in and students interacted by asking questions. They also sang him an “All American” song they had been preparing for RESN’s Memorial Day program. It was an amazing experience for all, and students were happy for the chance to meet this American hero.
