February was another busy month for the Charleroi Rotary Club. Laura Koon and Alyssa Mendola were officially inducted into Rotary on February 10. Diann Donaldson sponsored Miss Mendola and Colleen Arnowitz sponsored Mrs. Koon. The induction ceremony was conducted by Secretary John Helfenstein, who welcomed the new members.

Steve and Colleen Arnowitz announced that the date for the Ripepi Winery Fundraiser has been set for May 19. Details will be announced at a future meeting.

Dan Bieliski was the Student of the Month for February. He has been accepted to the Fayette campus of Pennsylvania State University, where he will major in chemical engineering. Dan has a love for math and science and is a member of the Chemistry Club. He volunteers with youth groups in his church, and he serves as the foreman on the Peer Jury at the Peer Jury at Charleroi High School. A certificate recognizing him as Student of the Month and a check were presented to Dan. He was accompanied by his parents.

Deb Keefer, Executive Director of the MVRCC, was a guest of the club on February 24, 2016. She reported that “Hoodie Hoo” day was a great success and encouraged members to attend next year’s festivities.

President Mike remarked that he would like to include our Interact students in upcoming Rotary events and anniversaries, and he also announced that the Mid Mon Valley Publishing Company is looking for space to open where customers could pay bills in Charleroi. This publishing company is one division of an out of town publication that is currently serving within the former service area covered by the Valley Independent.

The speaker for the Tri Club meeting was new Charleroi member Alyssa Mendola. Alyssa is a Certified Public Accountant and she spoke about items that qualify and don’t qualify as tax deductions. Alyssa also addressed questions regarding changing tax brackets, purchasing of large appliances for homes and businesses, and the application of a Privilege Tax in some communities.

The Charleroi Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at the Back Porch restaurant in Lower Speers. Meetings begin at 12:05 and are held in the Side Door Lounge. To inquire about membership or program information, please contact Mike Rupert at 412-422-4202 or John Helfenstein at 724-494-3195.
