The Rotary Clubs of Charleroi, Belle Vernon, and Monessen met on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Back Porch Restaurant in Speers.

Frank Jaworski spoke about the Belle Vernon Rotary club's support of the "Rails to Trails" passage sites in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The members of the Belle Vernon club are coordinating an effort to purchase a Shelter Box which will house several campers at a time as they journey along the historic path between Pittsburgh, PA and Washington, DC.

Several presentations have also been made by Steve Arnowitz of the Charleroi Rotary Club. Earlier this year Mr. Arnowitz joined Rotarians from other clubs in District 7330 on a humanitarian mission to the Dominican Republic. During the week long sojourn, the Rotarians visited and provided books and supplies for two schools, revisited a pottery site that had been planned by residents of the Dominican Republic and visiting Rotarians in 2012, and provided training for emergency personnel in and around Santo Domingo. Members of the group also participated in a medical clinic where local doctors donated their time to provide checkups and medical advice to local families. The Rotarians in attendance provided support and child care services by helping young children develop good hand washing skills, and giving haircuts to some of the children. Since his return from the mission, Mr. Arnowitz has made presentations to area clubs including New Stanton-Youngwood, Monongahela, Washington and Charleroi. Future presentations are planned for the Canonsburg and Norwin clubs. If anyone is interested in learning more about the mission to the Dominican Republic, contact Steve Arnowitz at 724-258-5631 or 412-389-2096.

The Charleroi club is planning to host another fundraiser in October. Plans are being made for a spaghetti dinner. Ticket information and other details will follow in next month's Rotary article.

The Charleroi Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at the Back Porch restaurant in Lower Speers. Meetings begin at Noon and are held in the Side Door meeting rooms. New members are welcome. For more information, contact Steve Arnowitz at 412-389-2096 or John Helfenstein at 724-494-3195.
