The Carroll Township Police Department has new computers in their vehicles compliments of Monongahela Valley Hospital.

The police department maintains a substation near the entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department. During a conversation with Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of Monongahela Valley Hospital, police chief Paul Brand mentioned that he wanted to equip the police vehicles with new computers for greater efficiency. Mr. Panza set up a meeting between the chief and Dorian King, a network coordinator in the hospital’s Information Systems Department, who researched the appropriate hardware and software to maximize the functionality.
“One of the main objectives was to identify durable hardware that could be transported between vehicles and withstand they type of hostile environments that the police officers face,” said Mr. King. “We also had to examine the necessary RAM and memory capabilities as well as the computers’ ability to support future technological advancements.”
The hospital provided the department with two Panasonic Toughbook® computers which can endure practically anything — shock, extreme temperatures and dust or debris. It can also be used for self defense and minor protection.
The computers are equipped with software that enables the officers to:
• Run license plate numbers
• Receive calls on the screen to reduce radio time
• Process an individual driver’s license and view an exact image of the license on the screen
• Access the Internet to check for outstanding warrants when on traffic stops
“Our partnership with Monongahela Valley Hospital is beneficial in so many ways,” said Chief Brand. “The computers that the hospital generously provided to our department will increase the effectiveness of how we protect the local community.”
Officer Michael Fendya added, “We were totally floored by the generosity of Monongahela Valley Hospital.”
