On Sunday, July 16, 2017, the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park commemorated the events of the Whiskey Rebellion by hosting Whiskey Rebellion Day on the grounds of the homestead.

WhiskeyRebellion Aug 2017
Jim Willison, a volunteer at the Oliver Miller Homestead for 17 years, explains the whiskey-making process to visitors.

Volunteers were on hand to lead visitors through daily tasks pertinent to life in the 18th century. The highlight of the day came at 2:30 p.m., when the volunteers performed a series of dramatic reenactments of the Miller family’s participation in the events that led up to and were a part of the Whiskey Rebellion. Three skits discussed the Miller family’s initial response to the whiskey tax, the women’s response to the men’s refusal to pay the tax, and the decision for some members of the Miller family to leave the area after the Whiskey Rebellion.

In the barn, the original Miller family still was on display, and volunteers explained the whiskey-making process to visitors, who also were able to see other pertinent Whiskey Rebellion memorabilia.

The Oliver Miller Homestead is open to the public every Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Their next event, scheduled to take place on September 17, will be ‘Living off the Land.’ For more information, visit www.olivermillerhomestead.org.
