A 70th wedding anniversary is a rare event involving great genetics and a little bit of luck to have both husband and wife surviving into their nineties.

Former Pleasant Hills Couple Celebrates Seventy Years of Marriage

On August 11, 2017 Ethel and Bill Slater formerly of Pleasant Hills will celebrate their seventieth wedding anniversary. They were married at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Homestead on Bill’s 25th birthday. Bill turned 95 on their anniversary and Ethel is 93.

Bill was a P-38 pilot in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. Following the war he had a long career with U.S. Steel during which he rose to the position of Superintendent at Carrie Furnace.

Ethel and Bill currently reside together at Mt. Lebanon Rehab and Wellness Center. The couple have five children, 10 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Their five children, Pat, Beth, Bill, Tim and Dan, gathered on August 12 to celebrate this momentous occasion with a cookout at the residence’s outdoor pavilion and grill area. Both Bill and Ethel still enjoy a good grilled hot dog!
