Library News

 Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center announces upcoming events.

The Library presents “Sip & Swirl,” a fundraiser, on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at 6 p.m. at A. J. Ceramics, 109 Sixth Street, Monessen. Pre-registration is required. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are $40. Participants will paint either a ceramic patriotic teddy bear, a frog, Betsy Ross, a turtle, or a large basket. If interested, please purchase tickets at Monessen Public Library or A. J. Ceramics prior to the event.

Are you a Steelers fan? The Westmoreland Library Network is presenting the One Book, One Community book discussion at Monessen Library on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. This year’s selection is “Their Life’s Work” by Gary M. Pomerantz. It is the definitive book on the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers that tells the story of the best team to ever play the game. Pre-registration is required. Call the Library at 724-684-4750 to have a copy of the book lent beforehand, so you may participate in the discussion.

The Mon Valley Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, June 20, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. New members welcome!

For our Eightieth Anniversary, the Library is having a contest to see how many people will check out 80 items from Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center during 2016. At the end of the year, the patrons who become members of the “80 Club” will be entered in a drawing for a great prize! Start reading!

Upcoming Children’s Activities:

Toddler Time – 11 a.m.  on Wednesdays, June 1, 6, 15, 22, 19. Age appropriate story and activities.

Summer Reading Pre-Season Camp -- Saturday June 4 and 11, at 11 a.m.

Storytime STEM PACK – Monday, June 6, 2016, starting at 5 p.m.  for parents/guardians and 6 p.m. for students. Parents and Guardians are invited to learn how library Storytime STEM Packs will enrich your child’s summer reading experience. Miss Marsha will entertain the children for the hour, while parents learn. At 6 p.m., parents and children get a hands-on experience doing a STEM activity. Come and see the fun!

Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Event – Monday, June 13, 2016 at 5 p.m. Children MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED by June 6 to attend this event! Enjoy outdoor activities, refreshments, and a special surprise for preregistered children. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Children’s Room of the Library.

June 18, 2016 – Two exciting children’s events in one day!

Daddy Dino Dig, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Pre-school aged children can bring Daddy or another adult for a Father’s Day Special Dinosaur Dig for fossils. See real dinosaur artifacts with Pat Laemmie, a dino expert, leading the expedition.

Science Weather Shows - meet author Diana Perry, who will be presenting. She has 33 science experiments for the children to participate in. The program is free!

Diana’s schedule for June 18: “The snake that could bake” – for beginning readers (Age 7-6) begins at 11 a.m. “The weather by Heather” – for 2nd to 5th grades will follow the “baking snake” program. “Andres, the Maya Warrior” – for 6th grade begins at 2:30 p.m. Books will be available for purchase at $12 each and will be autographed by the author.

Storytime, Monday, June 20 and 27 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. – Special summer reading sessions filled with fun, learning and play.
