Library News

The Monessen Public Library and Cultural Center has announced the following August Events.

Storytime

A new daytime Storytime program will be held at Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center on Wednesday mornings in August, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for children aged 3 to 7.  Old favorites and new stories will be read to the children at each session.  Registration is not necessary.

Monessen Military Banner Tribute

Ron Chromulak, Chairman of the Monessen Veterans Council and Dave Zilka, Director of Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center, have announced that the Monessen Veterans Council is partnering with Monessen Public Library to sponsor the Monessen Military Banner Tribute.  Through the program, a living or deceased veteran or an active duty member of the military can have their photograph displayed on a banner hung from a utility pole in the City of Monessen.

The cost of producing and displaying the banner is $100 per banner.  The banners will be hung as soon as they are received and taken down after Labor Day.  They will be used for years to come in the city and displayed from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Applications for the banners will be taken at Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center.  Bring a photo of the person, some general information and a check for $100 made out to “Monessen Public Library.”  The Library is closed on Fridays and Sundays.  Persons living out of the area can call the Library at 724-684-4750 for further information.  Applications can be found online at www.troopbanners.com/Monessen.  The application and scanned photo can be emailed to the Library at dzilka@hotmail.com with the check mailed to Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center, 326 Donner Avenue, Monessen, PA  15062.  Once the check is received, the banner order will be processed.  Small yard banners are also available.

“Beginning Genealogy” Class

Claire McMullen will host her “Beginning Genealogy” class on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the PA Room of Monessen Library.  This month’s topic will cover birth, marriage, divorce and death records, along with obituaries and death notices.  Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their personal family records.  Light refreshments will be served.  The class is free.
