Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during May. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.
 
 
Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, May 1 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free, painless screening will indicate if you need a more extensive test and if you have osteoporosis. No appointments necessary. For more information, call 724-348-6699.
 
Understanding Your Meal Plan - Wednesday, May 1 from 6 – 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This session builds on the education received in the Managing Your Diabetes program. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how your eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, May 2 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after effects. Understanding Your Blood Sugar Readings - Thursday, May 2 from 6 – 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Learn how to make sense out of all those blood sugar readings you document. Understand how your diet, medications, illness and stress affect your blood sugar. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, May 6 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.
 
Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, May 7 – Thursday, May 9 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This three-day education series focuses on diabetes self-management and care. Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Tuesday, May 7 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions, the walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss “Picnic Foods.” The program is free, but space is limited. Prostate Cancer Support Group - Wednesday, May 8 at 6 p.m., ECC. All prostate cancer patients, families and care givers are invited to attend this free support group. For more information, call 724-292-9404.
 
Childbirth Preparation Class - Wednesdays, May 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 7 – 9 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. A four-week series of prenatal education classes designed to prepare couples for the birthing process. Topics include: signs of labor, vaginal and caesarian deliveries, the role of a labor coach, comfort measures including breathing and relaxation skills and pain medication options. Couples will rehearse what they learn in class to help relieve anxiety surrounding the birthing experience. To register, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 25.
 
Skin Screening - Tuesday, May 14 from 2 - 4 p.m., Finleyville Community Center – In recognition of National Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection Month, Paul Ruschak, M.D. will conduct free skin screenings. Appointments are limited. To make your appointment, call 724-348-6699.
 
Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, May 14 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their friends, family or care-givers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, May 14 from 6 - 8 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.
 
Innovations in Breast Cancer Testing - Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m., ECC. Natalie Furgiuele-Iracki, M.D., will present a free program to discuss genetic screening for heredity breast and ovarian cancer. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Dr. Furgiuele-Iracki will repeat the talk at the HealthPLEX Willow Room on Monday, May 20, at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served and parking is free. Arthritis Information Program - Thursday, May 16 from 2 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Ostomy Support Group - Thursday, May 16 from 2 – 3:30 p.m., ECC. This support group is free and open to all persons with ostomies and their families and friends. The group meets the third Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1773.
 
AARP 55 Alive Refresher Driving Course - Friday, May 17 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., ECC. This is the nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help improve skills while teaching accident and traffic violation avoidance. Some insurance companies offer discounts for course completion. All information is conveyed in a classroom setting in one half-day session. The cost is $12 per person for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, call 724-258-1333.
 
Gala 25: An Evening to Remember - Saturday, May 18 at 6 p.m., Westin Convention Center – Allegheny Grand Ballroom, third floor. Join the MVH family and friends at the 25th annual Gala for a captivating evening of elegance and grace to dance the night away with Finesse Superband. Breastfeeding Class - Monday, May 20 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Adult CPR Instruction - Tuesday, May 28 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes are offered by Monongahela Valley Hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center. The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling 724-684-9536.
 
Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, May 29 from 9 – 11 a.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self-Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Public First-Aid Instruction - Thursday, May 30 from 6 – 9 p.m., ECC. Adult first aid classes are offered by the hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center. The $30 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling 724-684-9536.
