Municipal News

Monessen members of the Communities that Care Youth Council and Monessen Leos presented information to Monessen Council members and received a proclamation from Mayor Marvakis encouraging Monessen adults who smoke to protect families from the health risks of tobacco smoke by choosing to smoke outside cars and homes.

Children who live in homes allowing smoking inside have rates of asthma, bronchitis, ear infections and even tooth decay in baby teeth. The proclamation is displayed in Monessen Library.

These same clubs also developed messages to encourage tobacco retailers to remember to always check the age of customers since the majority of tobacco users began to smoke before the age of 18 when it is legal to buy tobacco.

Adults and youth who want to quit smoking can register for free help online at PA QuitLogix.org. Adults who are ready to quit also can receive free patches to relieve withdrawal symptoms.

The Monessen Tobacco-Free Coalition meets the first Tuesday of each month, except July, at Monessen Library at 11:30 a.m. Residents and organization representatives of the Mon Valley are invited to attend.
