A familiar local Rotary Club has a new name — and a renewed vision for the future. After more than 70 years as the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hills, the club is beginning its next chapter as the Rotary Club of the South Hills.

The new name reflects something that has been happening naturally for years. While the club remains deeply connected to Pleasant Hills, its membership, service projects and community partnerships now extend throughout the South Hills.

“Our roots are here, and we are incredibly proud of them,” said Club President Cindy Weiss. “But when we looked at who we serve, where our members come from and the organizations we work with, South Hills simply represents who we have become.”

The club currently works with three high school Interact Clubs at Thomas Jefferson, Brentwood and South Park, awards scholarships to area students, supports local food banks and community organizations, and collaborates with other Rotary clubs and nonprofit organizations throughout the area.

Recent service efforts have included placing AEDs with community organizations, providing meals and supplies to families in need, supporting area schools and youth programs, participating in community service projects and continuing Rotary's worldwide effort to eradicate polio.

The club also hopes its broader identity will introduce Rotary to people who may never have realized there was a Rotary club serving their community.

“We want people throughout the South Hills to know that there is a place for them in Rotary,” Weiss said. “You don't have to live in one particular municipality. If you care about your community, enjoy meeting people and want to be part of something that makes a difference, we would love for you to get to know us.”

For Weiss, a second-generation Rotarian, changing the name also came with an appreciation for the club's history. Her father was a member of the club, making the decision especially meaningful. “I know how much the history and traditions of this club matter,” Weiss said. “I believe the best way we can honor the Rotarians who built it is to make sure the club they loved remains strong and continues serving our communities for generations to come.”

The name may be new, but the mission remains the same: Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of the South Hills sees its new name not as a departure from its past, but as an opportunity to build upon it — creating new partnerships, welcoming new members and finding even more ways to serve. The Rotary Club of Pleasant Hills built a proud legacy. The Rotary Club of the South Hills is ready to carry it forward.
