At their August 10 meeting Canonsburg Borough Council discussed traffic implications associated with the upcoming HopeFest, which will be held Saturday, September 26 along West Pike Street. The event will include a bike run, motorcycle events, BMX stunt bicycles and live music. The main guest will be motorcycle stunt performer Scott Caraloolad and his “Ride4Life” team.

The event will benefit the Armory Youth Center which is located at 16 West College Street. The center, which helps and provides activities for disadvantaged young people, is owned and operated by Metro Pittsburgh Youth for Christ. Leaders of the organization have been in touch with council to provide logistics of the Canonsburg all-day Hopefest event, which is expected to draw a large crowd.

PennDOT recently approved a permit for the event, and insurance certificates are in place.

Council member Tim Bilsky said that residents will be informed of street closures for the bike run through an announcement posted on the borough marquee.

     In other business, Council:

  • Approved vacating property owned by Nathann Johnson located on Second Avenue in the Third Ward. Johnson wants to combine four lots into one. The matter had been referred to the Planning Commission, who OKed the request on August 6.
  • Announced that the Canonsburg Police Department will conduct their Drug Take Back Program on Saturday, September 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canonsburg Shop ‘n’ Save store.
  • Approved a lease-to-own agreement for the Public Works Department to obtain a new John Deere 60G compact excavator.
  • Discussed the status of the construction of a sanitary holding tank with an engineer representing A&S Landscaping, who is involved in a building project on Strabane Avenue. Council agreed to approve the site plan without any sanitary disposal plan; however, Bevec said lack of a sanitary plan would hold up a formal occupancy permit.
  • Approved a handicapped parking sign for a resident who lives at 506 Duquesne Avenue.
  • Approved an increase to the Police Pension Plan from 2 ½% to 4 %.
