The Rotary Club of Charleroi continued to plan events, host guests, and raise funds to support their educational projects during April and May.

President Mike Rupert presented the placemats that were distributed to My Girls Restaurant in Charleroi and Lenzi’s Restaurant in Monongahela. Ads were taken out by Rotarians and friends throughout the area, and the placemats were used during the first weekend in June.

On May 19, a tour and reception was held at Ripepi Winery. Owner Rich Ripepi entertained Rotarians and guests with information about wines and how the selection of a particular wine enhances the taste of combinations of cheese, fruit, and other accompaniments. Proceeds from tevents like these help to fund community projects.

Students of the Month for March and April were honored at the April meeting. Brionna Nicholson plans to attend college and major in psychology. She then plans to attend medical school and hopes to become a physician in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Brionna participated in track in high school and has worked at the Cougar Mini Mart. Nicholas Chapasko plans to attend the University of Dayton. He will major in the natural sciences and is considering attendance at dental school. Nicholas participated in the Ski Club, Spanish Club, STEM, and was the treasurer for the National Honor Society. Both students were presented with certificates and each received a check from the Rotary Club. Letters of congratulations and information about membership in Rotary International were presented to the parents of each student.

Jeff Oliver from the Mon Valley Independent spoke at the Tri Club meeting in April. He noted that the investors of the paper were local members of the business community. The paper is operating out of a building in Westgate Manor, but it is a limited operation with most work being done online by the staff. Announcements, obituaries, and articles are now being accepted for publication.

Erin Sinko, Concierge Department manager at Mon Valley Hospital spoke at the Tri Club meeting in May. Since beginning her employment 27 years ago, she has made it her goal to learn the names and functions of as many employees as possible in order to discern where and how to serve patients best. As the Concierge, she coordinates many activities for the greeters, the hospital chaplains, and the Orthopedic Institute volunteers. She also provides information for patients’ visitors from out of town in regards to area restaurants, retail businesses, and hotel accommodations.

The Charleroi Rotary Club is interested in welcoming you! We meet for lunch on Wednesdays at 12:05 in the Side Door Lounge at the Back Porch restaurant in Lower Speers.
